What Must Die So You Can Live? Ego Death Worksheet

This worksheet is not for “re-framing” a belief so it feels nicer. It is for naming the belief that has already expired, seeing what it protected, and letting it burn so a truer identity can stand.
Do it once, for one belief. Do not stack five at time. Give each belief/identity change, at least 1 month of repetition before moving onto another.

1. Name the Corpse

Answer as bluntly as possible.

  • The belief I still obey is:
  • I first learned this when:
  • The version of me who needed this belief was trying to stay safe from:

2. How it kept you alive

Every old belief was once a survival strategy, which is why we can find it hard to let them go – our system literally thinks we’re going to die if we do. We need to get o the bottom of what problem this belief is solving, and what we think we will lose if we let it go.

  • This belief protected me from:
  • It helped me stay (seen/unseen, useful, liked, small, accepted, whatever it may be):
  • If I lose this belief, the part of me that is afraid says I will become:

3. The Cost

Not the spiritual cost. The lived one.

  • Because I believe this, I keep choosing:
  • I abandon:
  • I tolerate:
  • My body feels this belief as:

4. The Unmasking

Answer without softening.

  • If this belief died tonight, what would I have to stop performing?
  • What would be the most terrible thing about not playing this character?
  • Who benefits if I keep this story?
  • What am I postponing/avoiding by staying loyal to it?

5. The Cut

Write a death sentence for the old belief in the present tense. No “I am trying.” Be definitive.

Example: “I no longer choose to believe (whatever it is), it is dead to me, and so is the life that came with it. I now refuse to tolerate (whatever it was you were tolerating), I no longer abandon (whatever you previously abandoned). I am now someone who (does/believes whatever it is you would rather do/believe).”

6. Replacement

When an old identity is gone, another has to take it’s place, we can never simply be nothing, or we wouldn’t exist. Now you have to curate the person you have been avoiding.

  • The self that can live without the old belief is:
  • My new self is allowed to:
  • I no longer have to:

The self that can lives without the old belief does THIS instead of THAT, choose 3 habits your former self did, because of the old belief, and trade them in for new habits.

“I do ___ instead of ___.”

7. One proof in the next 48 hours

Belief change without a physical act is just journaling.

  • One small action/risk/decision that would only make sense if the old belief is dead:
  • I will do it by:
  • If I flinch, that is the old self asking to be kept alive. I will respond by:

8. Anchor the new identity in the body

A written line is not finished until the body agrees.
Choose a pressure point somewhere on your body when you would like to be able to activate this new identity. Think of it like an ‘on’ switch.
A good point is usually the wrist, holding it between your thumb and index finger (thumb on the inner side, index on the top).

Choose the new statement/identity you want to believe and live by.
The belief I now obey is:

Say it aloud as you press on your chosen point. Do this 3 times. It is done.
Press this point to reaffirm and ingrain, as you need to.

Ashes Check (do this 3 days later)

  • Did the old sentence try to come back? How?
  • What did I do instead of obeying it?
  • What still needs to burn?
  • How will I keep the remaining resistance under control when it comes up? How does my new identity deal with it?
